Some had an instructor,
At their local Rec Center;
It was the ‘cool’ thing to do,
Someone with a Red Cross badge was their mentor.
Or maybe it was at Summer Camp,
Where you learned all the basics;
You learned how to get your face wet,
How to breathe and how to kick.
“Oh, I learned with the fellas,
“Down at Bartlett’s Pond;
“We just jumped right in,
“And, were swimming…before long!”
Then, there’s the old-fashioned way,
And, certainly not what I’d recommend;
An adult would simply throw you in,
Then, it was sink or swim!
I’ll not tell you…how I learned,
Because…I never did;
And, for years and years…I told nobody,
This truth…I kept hid.
But, sooner or later…the truth comes out,
We can’t forever hide it;
To avoid the subject…too much trouble,
Trying to…you might just as well quit!
As a matter of fact, it’s good,
To know how to swim;
You just never know when it’s needed,
It might prevent someone from becoming a victim.
Go out…get those SWIMMING LESSONS,
You’ll be glad that you did;
Then, you’ll no longer have a secret,
One that must be kept hid!
